What do we hope to hear?

One of the advantages of living in a little valley with relatively steep sides is that everything is amplified.

Birdsong is all around, and often you can discern the exchanges, friendly or otherwise, from one side to the other.

I don’t speak ‘bird’ but do recognise tones and patterns. And in the narrower, deeper section downstream from the old reservoir, this exchange is even more apparent.

As humans, we also unconsciously listen for patterns. And make intuitive judgments about whether what we are discerning aligns with our language of meaning.

Yes, I recognise that. I understand what it says.

No, that doesn’t fit.

And sometimes, we need to hang around long enough to learn a new language.
