There is more than we realise

Standing quietly on the causeway, we were enjoying creating gentle ripples in the calm stocking pond at the end of the lake. And watching the effect on the water in the late afternoon light.

How beautiful.

Turning around and looking up the lake, we noticed another circle of ripples, without apparent cause, just ten meters away.

Curious, we waited.

A brown head appeared, returning the curiosity, before diving back under in a sleek, silent movement. It’s supple back and tail just breaking the surface as it descended.

An expert swimmer, we didn’t see the shy otter again. But we heard its chirping in the reeds on the other side of the lake in the gathering dark.

What an experience, but we could have so easily missed it.

There is more around us than we realise.
