Love is a way of seeing

Lakeside in the morning sunlight, with geese on the bank and goosanders on the water

I started contemplating love as another of my little words this week. And soon realised that the word love was altogether different (you knew, of course). It isn’t a pivot word, like ‘and’ or ‘yet’. Instead, it offers us a transcendent way of seeing. With soft eyes and a generous heart. Who do you know … Read more

On being bringers of peace

View across the tumbling water to the reeds.

To be bringers of peace, we have to be carriers of peace. Yet, this isn’t something we can put on like a coat or a mask. However beautiful. So, how and where do we replenish our reservoir of peace? Yesterday, I turned again to the farmer/poet Wendell Berry to reset my heart. THE PEACE OF … Read more

Being open to seeing with the eyes of our heart

Close up of dew on gorse flower, surrounded by gorse thorns

Many of us will be familiar with, and indeed cherish, the phrase from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”  Yet, let’s not kid ourselves that this is some warm feeling that makes us smile. No more careless looking

Life at the heart of autumn

In the slanting sunlight, I spied one of our bumper acorns. Plump and free of its cup, it was ready for germination and sprouting in the moist soil. This is life in its unfolding, doing what it does in season. So what about us? Where are we opening ourselves to this next stage of life? … Read more

How far can you see?

I suspect there is a limit to your physical sight. There certainly is to mine! And it depends on our vantage point. However, I also wonder if we can see further with the eyes of our hearts. And perhaps that’s what will serve us better in the coming days.

Seeing with the eyes of our heart

Even in our most alone-ness, we are not alone. The earth beneath our feet teems with more life than we can imagine. While the air we breathe is shared with others across space and time, irrespective of status. And the flow of water continues its forever circularity through the tiniest cavities and the greatest of … Read more
