This is a holly leaf, in damp Welsh morning light.
We have a few holly trees in a variety of places in the valley. I have become used to them being here.
And then one day I looked up and realised there were lots of them.
How did that happen?
Instead of seeing what was there, I’d only been noticing what I expected to see. Suddenly I realised there were lots of little holly trees which had grown at the side of the paths and were now raising their abundant glossy leaves to the sky.
Yet again, nature teaches us about bigger things.
Are we open to surprise?
