Opening our eyes to the connected whole

We are extraordinary pattern-recognising beings.

At first sight, we intuitively perceive the pattern that makes the whole long before seeing the constituent parts.

If we didn’t have this facility, we would struggle to navigate life.

Take language. We don’t create the whole word or phrase by piecing together the letters or syllables. Once we’ve learnt enough, we get a sense of what is being communicated by rapidly recognising the patterns that make up words and phrases.

Yet our education system and Western individualist culture constantly want to erect boundaries—disconnected silos that train us to see the parts, not the whole.

This is such a waste of our inbuilt capacity to appreciate the interconnectedness of all things. And ultimately limits our potential to see possibilities, including for our most pressing challenges.
